1. The difference of two numbers is 20% of the larger number. If the smaller number is 12, the larger one is :

A. 15

D. 20

Solution:

Let the number be x
Then,

\begin{aligned} \Leftrightarrow x - 12 = 20 % of x \\ \Leftrightarrow x - \frac{x}{5} = 12 \\ \Leftrightarrow \frac{4 x}{5} = 12 \\ \Leftrightarrow x = \frac{12 \times 5}{4} \\ \Leftrightarrow x = 15 \end{aligned}
