1. What is the greater of the two numbers whose product is 1092 and the sum of the two numbers exceeds their difference by 42 ?

A. 44

B. 48

C. 52

D. 54

Solution:

Let the numbers be x and y
Then,

x y = 1092..... (i)

And,

\begin{aligned} \Leftrightarrow (x + y) - (x - y) = 42 \\ \Leftrightarrow 2 y = 42 \\ \Leftrightarrow y = 21 \end{aligned}

Putting y = 21 in (i), we get :

x = \frac{1092}{21} = 52

Hence, greater number = 52
